A vehicle believed to have killed three people after it plunged into the flooded Rukuru River when the driver failed to notice that the Kyung Bridge had been washed away on the early hours of Thursday, April 22 has been retrieved.
The deceased were identified as a Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officer and two immigration department officers.
On Monday, April 26, community members around Iponga informed the Karonga district council officials, after spotting a vehicle in the river.
Officials had to engage with the Zhejiang construction communications group (ZCCC), the contractor who has been tasked to fix the bridge to remove it using an excavator.
Meanwhile, the Kyungu Bridge is temporarily operational after the contractor managed to backfill a single lane of the damaged bridge.
