Capital Hill is working on establishing the possible existence of a Covid 19 variant in the country after some expatriates who recently came in from India test positive for the disease; Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda has confirmed the development.

Chiponda has since disclosed that samples taken from the group have already been sent to South Africa to establish whether or not they are carrying the Covid 19 variant.

The ex-pats are part of a group of 60 Indian nationals that come into the country annually to assist in operating advanced production machinery at Salima Sugar Company.

Earlier this week, Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 under the Malawi government announced a ban on travel to and from four countries battling a deadly 3rd wave of Covid-19 to prevent the importation and further spread of the new virus variant.

The countries concerned included Bangladesh, Brazil, India, and Pakistan.

According to the International media reports, India has been reporting over 200,000 cases daily while confirming close to 16 million infections.
