President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has expressed shock over the death of Lance Corporal Chitenji Kamanga, a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier.

Kamanga was killed on Monday during an attack on her base in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

She was in that country on tour of duty under the United Nations organisation Stabilization Mission.

In a statement released by Presidential Press Secretary Brian Banda, President Chakwera calls on Malawians to privately observe a minute of silence in honour of the fallen soldier.

Banda said Chakwera in his capacity as MDF Commander-in-Chief, “has since spoken to the family of the deceased to express both his condolence and his gratitude for the fallen soldier’s service in the cause of Africa’s peace and freedom, a cause for which she courageously sacrificed her life”.

Kamanga was based at Malawi Maritime Force Headquarters in Monkey-bay. Mangochi.

She hailed from Mbayani Village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.

The remains of of Lance Corporal Chitenji Kamanga will be repatriated to Malawi once the United Nations (UN) procedures are completed and that the nation will be informed, according to MDF statement.
