A few days after President Lazarus Chakwera showed Government’s interest in mining through his National Address, Mineral Utilization Foundation (MUF) a local based organization has supported the idea of small scale mining sector saying it has potential to create over a million jobs and improve Malawi’s economy.
MUF Executive Director Sososo Gondwe revealed this on Monday in an interview with Malawi News Agency.
He said: Firstly we need to sensitize people on what mineral resources are in their localities, what can they do with these resources and how they can process them in order to start marketing them.
“Most of the minerals we have in Malawi have their markets abroad so as a country, the government will generate a lot of forex from such business.”
Gondwe has since urged Malawians across the country to make use of such a golden chance by organizing themselves in cooperatives.
“It is high time that we organize ourselves, the market is there and a lot of jobs will be created for the citizenry.” He said.
In the National Address delivered on May 2, President Chakwera said he wants to turn around the mining sector so that it becomes the back bone of the country’s industrialization, wealth and job creations.
He also revealed that government is taking steps to establish the Mining Regulatory Authority to oversee all matters of Mining.
