Former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Dalitso Kabambe who is also one of aspirants vying for the post of the Presidency in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been implicated in illegal water connection.

Kabambe’s name is contained in the “Name and Shame” list released by the Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) made available to faceofmalawi.

According to the statement, LWB instituted an investigation earlier this year and it uncovered 68 water theft cases including that of Kabambe.

“Between January and April 2021, we investigated and confirmed a total of 68 water theft cases, and a total of K47.3 million was administratively charged in penalties. These cases, already in Police case files, are being prosecuted in the courts of Malawi.

“Water theft is a criminal offense classified as “Fraudulent Appropriation of Water” under Section 298 ( of the Penal Code, carrying a maximum prison sentence of five years,” reads in part the statement.

While acknowledging the incident, Kabambe claims that it’s his tenant that was involved in illegal water connection.

“The house in question on Plot Number 06/209 in Area 6, Lilongwe is indeed owned by Dr Dalitso Kabambe and was rented out to Mr O.M. Prakash of Indian origin back in 2014. He is the current occupant of the house.

“The issue of illegal water connection was brought to the attention of Dr Kabambe through the current occupant in Feb/March this year,” reads part of the statement.

Added the statement: “The matter was therefore sorted out amicably with LWB where all payments were done as per the supporting documents available and the matter was closed.

“It should therefore be noted that Dr Kabambe has no case of illegal water connection with LWB and does not owe the Board any outstanding payments on the matter neither does Mr O.M. Prakash, who is the current occupant of the house in question.”

LWB is yet to comment on the clarification.
