A rare fish disease outbreak has been reported in Rumphi district, the Ministry of Agriculture is yet to confirm the development.

Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) first made the stride in Mchinji District in July last year at Dambo village, in Mlonyeni Extension Planning Area (EPA) within Kasungu ADD.

The outbreak is believed to be a highly contagious fungal disease that mostly affects freshwater fish and has devastating socio-economic consequences, including disruption of natural aquatic species diversity.

According to the Director of Fisheries at Malawi Fisheries Department Friday Njaya they are currently working with their counterparts from the veterinary and animal health and development services to carry out surveillance activities.
