A man, who was recently released from the Tihar jail, allegedly murdered a senior citizen in South-West Delhi’s Sagarpur area on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The 72-year-old man was allegedly strangled to death during a robbery attempt.

Reportedly, the accused Sunny Rai, was released from Tihar jail around two months ago. The deceased man was identified as Sunil Sehgal.

On the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, Sehgal woke up to go to the washroom. Meanwhile, Rai broke into Sehgal’s house and was stealing his gold chain, ring and ATM card.

When Rai heard a noise, he went to Sehgal’s washroom. The latter made an attempt to raise an alarm but was overpowered by the accused. Rai allegedly strangled Sehgal to death and fled from the spot.

The incident came to light when Sehgal did not answer his door despite his neighbour’s repeated knocks. The man’s neighbour then called his daughter, who alerted the police. A police team rushed to the spot after being apprised and found Sehgal’s body in the washroom.

Initially, the cops suspected it to be a case of accidental death and shifted the body to a hospital for a post-mortem. A forensic team was also called to the spot to collect evidence. The preliminary probe revealed that Rai’s entry into Sehgal’s house was not forced. The accused was also wearing a mask to prevent identification, The Indian Express reported.

The cops checked the CCTV and showed the footage to locals. The police then identified the suspect as Sunny Rai, who resides 300 metres away from Sehgal’s house. After zeroing in on the suspect, the police conducted a raid at Rai’s house and arrested him.

DCP (South-West) Ingit Pratap Singh said,

“Sunny was earlier arrested in a case of robbery and then an NDPS case. On March 11, he was released from Tihar jail. 15 days before the incident, he had tried to enter Sehgal’s house, but failed. This time, however, he stole Sehgal’s gold chain and a ring and sold it to local shopkeeper, Bhanu Partap, at Rs 48,000. We have also arrested Bhanu Partap and recovered the gold chain and ring from him. Sunny had also found a note with Sehgal’s ATM pin and had withdrawn Rs 41,000, which, too, has been recovered. “
