President Lazarus Chakwera has been installed as the champion of Higher Education in Africa at an event held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

Speaking after the installation Chakwera said expressed hope that Ruforum will continue working towards uplifting tertiary education in Africa.

He has also stated that universities that have been formed following the delinking of University of Malawi also need to be included in the forum.

On his part, Executive Secretary for the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (Ruforum), Adipala Ekwamu, indicated that Chakwera’s recognition has been motivated by his contributions towards tertiary education in Malawi and beyond.

Ekwamu, who is from Makelele University, said the President has promoted inclusive education and widened access to tertiary education in Malawi.

He has further disclosed that Ruforum has recognised Chakwera for championing education for girls.

The forum has also hailed the country for allocating significant resources to education in the 2021/22 National Budget.
