Malawi has confirmed cases of the Indian covid-19 variant, The Presidential Taskforce on Covid 19 has confirmed.

According to Chairperson of the taskforce Wilfred Chalamira Nkhoma, the variant has been confirmed from 740 samples that the country sent to South Africa’s Centre for Disease Control for testing to establish if the country has the new Covid-19 variant.

The samples were taken from technicians at Salima Sugar Company who arrived in the country in April from India to assist in operating advanced production machinery at the company’s main site.

Nkhoma has since appealed to the citizenry to continue observing all preventive measures and partake in the vaccination exercise so as to prevent further spread.
