Police in Zomba district is keeping in Custody 5 people allegedly connected to a wave of robberies in the city.
According to Eastern Region Police publicist, Joseph Sauka, the 5 were arrested following a tip-off that the police in the district received from their Blantyre counterparts, indicating that the suspects would be traveling from the commercial capital to Zomba.
When the said suspects arrived in Zomba Thursday afternoon, the cops had already set up a trap and trailed them, upon noting that they were following a vehicle that was coming from a bank and heading to Chancellor College.
According to a police report making rounds, the police then shot at the alleged robbers with the hope of scaring them.
During the rumble with the police, a stray bullet hit one of the officers who died as they were taking him to Zomba Central Hospital.
