President Lazarus Chakwera has complied with a high court order by appointing four new commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The four are Richard Chapweteka from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Francis Kasaila, Emmanuel Fabiano and Caroline Mfune, from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
They have replaced Steve Duwa, Arthur Nanthuru, Linda Kunje and Jean Mathanga.
The quartet’s appointments were nullified by the high court on the basis that former President Peter Mutharika erred by appointing four commissioners from the DPP instead of three as stipulated by the law.
The Judge then ordered the two parties to re-appoint new Commissioners within 7 days.
