A group of elderly people and chiefs in the country are demanding the introduction of a pension scheme for the elderly they were promised, arguing that life is very tough for them in the villages.

They said  that they are living a miserable life, as they are keeping orphans but are struggling to find food, clothes, beddings among other basic needs.

Deputy Director Responsible for Elderly Affairs Gideon Kachingwe  has confirmed the development .

Kachingwe said that the Ministry is in the process of developing a social pension scheme for the elderly.

Statistics show that currently Malawi has at least 859,000 older persons.
