Police in South Africa are investigating the circumstances that led to the tragic death of a 21-year-old woman who was found dead and burned in an apartment on Sunday, 13th June.

It is alleged that the deceased was sleeping in the apartment while her friends went across the road to the beach.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said it is alleged that on Sunday, 13 June at approximately 00:05 SAPS Humewood and other external role players responded to a complaint of an apartment that was burning.

“After the fire was extinguish the body of a 21 year old female was found.  It is alleged that the deceased was sleeping in the apartment while her friends went across the road to the beach. As they were returning they noticed smoke coming from the apartment and contacted the 10111 centre.

“The cause of the fire will be investigated, the fire did not spread to other apartments. The investigation is ongoing, and the name of the deceased will be released once the next of kin has been informed,” Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg

On Saturday, 12 June a body of a 46-year-old woman burnt to death inside her double-storey home in Hyde Park, Mitchells Plain in Cape Town in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“When firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire in Weltevreden Road, they found a double-storey house ablaze and were informed that there was a person inside,” said Carelse.

“The body of the woman, aged 46, was found at 5:18, added the spokesperson. He said firefighting crews managed to put out the blaze, approximately an hour later, at 6:50.

“A building inspector was requested to ascertain the structural integrity of the dwelling,” said Carelse.
