A 37-year-old man has died after drowning in a well in Rumphi district.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Rumphi Police sergeant Tupeliwe Kabwilo has confirmed the development while identifying the deceased as Winewa Makhwakhwa.

According to Sergeant Kabwilo, the deceased was found floating in a well, known as Chimbwi.

The relatives of the deceased told the police that Makhwakhwa left home on Tuesday 16, for washing clothes at a nearby well.

As time passed the relatives decided to follow him up where they discovered that he was floating dead.

They immediately reported the matter to the police.

Police pulled his body ashore and medical personnel from Katowo Rural hospital conducted a postmortem which revealed that Makhwakhwa died of suffocation and no foul play is suspected according to Kabwilo.

Makhwakhwa hailed from Kamunoli Village under Traditional Authority Zolokere in Rumphi district.
