The Technical, Entrepreneurial, and Vocational Education and Training (Teveta) in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour has today June 22 closed Gateway College in Mangochi and Mulanje districts with immediate effect for operating illegally in the Country.

The development follows an inspection exercise the Authority together with the Ministry undertook at the institutions.

A statement released on Teveta Malawi Facebook page disclosed that apart from failing to meeting Government standards for operating any college in Malawi, it was further established that the colleges are offering qualifications from unrecognized awarding bodies.

This comes against a background of engagements with the management of the college, where a directive to suspend all operations at their Mangochi campus was made in February 2021.

However, it was established that despite such a directive the college continued to operate and further opened another campus in Mulanje under the pretense of TEVET Authority’s approval.

The statement has also acknowledged that the Authority is investigating reports that the management of the institution embezzled examination fees for some trainees at their institution in Mangochi.

Tevet has further warned that once all facts are established, the Authority will engage law enforces for the law to take its course.

The Authority has since called on the General Public to cross-check with the Authority on the registration status for any institution before enrolling with them.

Meanwhile, Gateway College management is yet to comment on the development.
