Malawi Congress Party (MCP) led by a new big catch Alex Chimwala is doing everything possible to emerge victorious in Chikwembere Ward in the forth by-elections.
As part of the campaign trail, Chimwala and some MCP top officials on Wednesday launched roads upgrading projects in the area which will see Matope road being upgraded to the required thereby easing transport challenges.
The launch was graced by MCP Campaign Director Moses Kunkuyu who is also Presidential Advisor on Chiefs.
Speaking after the launch Kunkuyu trashed claims that the upgrading on the road is in line with the forthcoming by-elections.
“The people of this area , in Blantyre North Constituency-Chikwembere Ward have been crying for this road, Matope road to be upgrading and all the past regime have been dodging this project and it has taken a while. This road is very important but there has been a lot of lies being peddled, money allocated to this road project being embezzled.
“When our Shadow Councillor Wyson Makungwa approached government to say can this work be done, government through the responsible Ministry thought it wise to come in and assist not because someone is standing as a candidate of the area bug government knows the importance of this road ,” said Kunkuyu.
Concurring with kunkuyu’s remarks, Chimwala hinted that the Tonse Alliance government of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is working hard in transforming Chikwembere Ward and other areas in Blantyre.
“To be honest with you, the upgrading projects of Matope road clearly shows that Chakwera is a listening leader and is committed to transform this country because we presented the sufferings of this area few days ago and today the upgrading project is commencing and am really excited,” said Chimwale while adding that other roads will be upgraded through cash for work program.
Turning to the forthcoming by-elections, Chimwala urged the people of Chigwembere Ward to come out in large numbers on June 29, 2021 and vote for Wyson Makungwa.
On her part, Senior Chief Chigalu hailed government for commencing the upgrading of Matope road saying this will ease transportation problem in the area.
She then urged the Chakwera administration to also consider the area by drilling new borehole saying the people of the area are drinking unsafe water.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will hold by-elections in Chikwembere Ward following the death of Councillor Mathews Jilani.
The electoral body will also hold by-elections in Lalanje Ward in Nsanje and Nkhata-Bay Central Constituency on June 29, 2021.
