The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex community (LGBTI+) in the Country are set to hold demonstrations on Saturday as part of the Pride Parade.

The parade held to be in Lilongwe under the theme “Liberty and Justice for All” is aimed at forcing the government to implement recommendations that Malawi noted during the Universal Periodic Review meeting in Geneva.

The recommendations include the legalization of same-sex marriages in the country and also advocating for equal access to health care.

Speaking to the media, Nyasa Rainbow Alliance director Eric Sambisa, said the group has decided to petition the government to force authorities to act on the recommendations.

Malawi has been facing calls to decriminalize same-sex marriages for a while now, a call government insists will have to undergo a thorough review.

The call was made in December last year by a legion of EU nations like the UK, United States of America, Canada, Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Other countries that supported the move were Italy and Latvia who presented the recommendation at a time the United Nations Human Rights Councils Universal Periodic Review Working Group was examining the country’s human rights record.
