Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) under its project, Prevent Control and Contain the Covid-19 Epidemic in Malawi on Tuesday donated assorted Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to Chikwawa District Hospital (DHO) to assist in the fight against Covid-19 as the third wave looms.
MRCS District Coordinator for Chikwawa, Yasintha Namacha said in an interview that the donated items include, 10,000 disposable facemasks, 10, 000 disposable aprons, 10,000 gloves, 500 face shields, 135 sparing bottles and 30 bottles (5litres each) of hand sanitizer.
“We have donated these PPEs to DHO and other healthy facilities in trying to prevent and containing Covid-19,” she said, adding that the MRCS donated PPEs in other public places like schools, markets apart from raising awareness in the communities on Covid-19 prevention.
Namacha said the DHO would then distribute the PPEs based on the demand.
She urged people in the district to continue observing the preventive measures “as the third wave looms”.
Chikwawa Council, Director of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Dr. Stalin Zinkanda hailed the MRCS for the donation, describing it a surprise gesture.
He said the health office would prioritize health facilities with low stock of PPEs, adding, “I am sure these PPEs will help us continue protecting our health workers and our clients,”
Zinkanda said the district would still promote Covid-19 preventive measures while administering the Covid-19 vaccine.
The MRCS made the donation in Chikwawa with the European Union, Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aids financial assistance.
Currently, Chikwawa recorded three Covid-19 active cases
