With an aim of cultivating Indian hemp in Malawi, government has call upon the researchers to do a study on what products can made from the local variety of hemp well known as Chamba.
The call comes as advocates for the production of cannabis have asked government to consider legalizing the local variety of hemp.
Ministry of Agriculture Spokesperson Grecian Lungu said that the country will only legalize the local hemp if there are positive results from studies conducted on the crop
Last year, Malawi relaxed laws against growing and selling cannabis, making it legal for use in the production of medicines and hemp fibers used in industry.
Meanwhile, Parliament made it legal to cultivate and process cannabis for those two uses, but stops its recreational use.
