Police in Mchinji are keeping in custody a businessman for being in possession with counterfeit banknotes.

Mchinji Police Officer in Charge, George Chinkhungu, confirmed of the development.

Chinkhungu identified the suspect as Masaka Phiri and was arrested at Mchinji boarder.

The arrest followed a tip from members of the community who alerted the police that Phiri had suspected K2, 000 notes.

The total amount of the fake banknotes in Phiri’s possession was amounted to K90, 000.

Chinkhungu has since said that investigations are still underway to identify the source of the fake money.

Phiri is expected to appear before court very soon to be formally charged.
