A woman has died while other people have sustained injuries following a collision of three vehicles at Mthandiza area along the M1 Balaka-Ntcheu road.

Ntcheu Police spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu, says the incident happened on Friday morning as driver of a Nissan Vanette, Julius Hupa, was overtaking a Toyota Probox, driven by Martin Kapota from the direction of Balaka to Ntcheu with nine passengers on board.

Chigalu says in the process, Hupa collided with an oncoming Nissan Vanette minibus driven by Jailos Dothi and the Probox.

Dothi lost control and his vehicle overturned to the extreme offside.

“Following the impact, one female passenger who was in the Nissan Vanette, Patricia Chipeta, 42, of Chibisa Village, Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa, sustained severe head injury and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ntcheu District Hospital,” he said.

One male passenger from the same vehicle sustained serious injuries.

The two minibus drivers and eight other passengers from both minibuses escaped with minor injuries.

So far, five passengers have been admitted at the hospital.
