A vendor died and a child was injured Friday, July 2 afternoon in Gweru’s Central Business District when Police exchanged fire with a gang of suspected armed robbers at OK Supermarkets.
Police allegedly got a tip-off that some robbers were traveling from Victoria Falls in a Fortuner and were passing through Gweru.
Police detectives picked the car near Fairmile Hotel as it entered the city.
A chase ensued and the robbers are said to have rammed their Fortuner into another car at OK shop and fled on foot.
This prompted police officers to shoot at the gang members and a vendor was shot dead by a stray bullet.
A child who was injured in the melee has been rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
Two suspects were arrested while the rest escaped.
A large bag suspected to contain large sums of money was recovered from the vehicle.
