District council in Lilongwe has elected Councilor for Mapuyu Ward Gamaliyele Chisoni, as its new Chairperson after serving as a Vice-Chairperson for two consecutive terms.
Chisoni scooped the position after amassing 41 votes on the position His competitor in Dzanzi Ward Councilor, Limbani Phiri, got five votes giving way to Chisoni who was, until the Election Day, Vice-Chairperson of the local council.
The election for both Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson was conducted on Tuesday, managed by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) district team after the council had finished deliberating on the agendas appearing on the order paper of the full council meeting.
14 Members of Parliament (MPs) and 36 councilors cast their votes which saw Chisoni scooping the chairmanship position.
