The University of Malawi (Unima), formerly known as Chancellor College (CHANCO) has dismissed social media claims that 100 students at the institution have tested positive to COVID-19 leading to immediate closure of the institution.

On Monday, the social media was awash with reports that 100 students from UNIMA have tested positive to COVID-19.

According to reports, the Covid-19 emergency team at the institution recommended for a closure of the institution.

The move forced the management to have an emergency meeting on Tuesday.

But UNIMA Registrar Mary Wasiri rubbished the reports.

“There’s nothing like 100 students testing positive, I don’t know where people are getting these figures. We are on a temporary break as the procurement unit is processing the orders,” said Wasiri.

Wasiri clarified that in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases nationwide the University suspended face to face teaching and adopted an online system of imparting the lessons.

She said in the past week, a power surge destroyed several wifi routers hence suspending classes for a week to allow the procurement department of the University to replace the damaged gadgets.
