A local non-governmental organisation in newborn health, Mai Khanda on Tuesday donated surgery and maternity essentials worthy over K6 Million to Balaka District Health Office in response to critical need for hospital surgical and maternal supplies.

Project Manager for Mai Khanda’s Kwitanda Health Project, Robert Saiti said the essentials were donated towards maternal newborn and child health following a request from the hospital.

“We received a request from the district hospital that they exhausted funds for the year as such they had run out of essential supplies for maternity as well as the theatre, and we thought to respond in this way,” said Saiti.

Receiving the donation, Medical Officer at Balaka Hospital, Dr. Isha Katitta commended the Mai Khanda for responding to the hospital needs for the essential items Saying that the hospital was really struggling to find essentials for their day to day undertakings. She further disclosed that the donated items will be distributed to all the 18 facilities across the district,” she said.

The NGO added that it was concerned with a situation at the hospital especially at the maternity side such that it donated sterile gloves, examination gloves, cotton, gauze rolls, chromic solutions, glucose test strips and other structures.
