Police in Mponela, Dowa are keeping in custody two men for allegedly assaulted to death fellow supporter following a riot that took place during a football match at Mauni Primary school ground in TA Dzoole’s area.
Mponela Police Spokesperson Sergeant Macpatson Msadala confirmed of the arrests.
According to Msadala, there was a football match final for the trophy sponsored by member of Parliament for Dowa Central Constituency Darlington Harawa between Thauzi Football Club and Sambani Football Club and after the final whistle, Thauzi Football Club won the game.
This did not please the team and supporters of Sambani Football Club and a fight erupted between the two sides.
The suspects, Madalitso Banda, 32 and Jasten Nkhuku, 50 are alleged to have instigated the violence that led to death of Saukani Chimwaye aged 30.
Chimwaye was one of the supporters whose team won the game.
He was taken to Mponela Rural Hospital for treatment where he was treated as an out patient and died while at home.
