President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said he will act on the arrests of Minister of Energy Newton Kambala and his personal aide Chris Chaima Banda.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday arrested President for Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) Enoch Chihana and Presidential Advisor on Strategy Chris Chaima Banda on allegation that the three attempted to influence the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) to award contracts of 2020/2021fuel supply in favour of Orxy, Finergy and Trifugira Fuel companies.

The three have since spent a night in police cell in the capital Lilongwe.

Speaking in an interview with the press Executive Assistant of the President Sean Kampondeni said Chakwera is seeking information on the arrest to determine what action to take on Kambala and Chaima Banda.

Kampondeni has since said the president will not shield anyone found to be in breach of the law by an investigation done independently by law enforcement agencies.

He said the president believes working in government does not give anyone immunity from being investigated.

Meanwhile the three are expected to appear in court today for formal charges.
