The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has trashed social media reports that the Executive Director for Centre for Democracy and Economic Initiative (CDEDI) Sylvester Namiwa is in bad condition.
Namiwa was arrested yesterday in Lilongwe at Parliament building for holding a vigil despite not being approved by the Lilongwe City Council.
Following his arrest, some people on social media started reporting that Namiwa is feared dead as he was heavily beaten by the police.
According to National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera, Namiwa is still in the hands of the police, but in good health as well contrary to the social media reports.
“Mr Namiwa is still in police custody and in good health contrary to some social media reports that his life was in danger,” said Kadadzera in a press statement seen by Face of Malawi reporter.
Kadadzera then added that the general public will be notified when will Namiwa will be taken to court.
The police Publicist has therefore asked members of the general public to refrain from the tendency of circulating fake news.
