A magistrate court in Zomba has sentenced an ADMARC employee to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing K32 million.

George Nyirongo was convicted of theft by public servant for failing to account for the money while working as a cashier in Balaka.

The 48-year-old had pleaded not guilty to the charges, a move that prompted the state to parade 5 witnesses to prove its case.

Police prosecutor Louis Makiyi told the court that public servants in positions of trust ought to work with responsibilities to public funds.

Passing her sentence, Zomba High Court Assistant Registrar Helen Kachala stressed that public funds are meant to benefit Malawians.
