The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has called on the Commissioner of the Independent Police to conduct investigations on the arrest of Sylvester Namiwa who is the Executive Director for Center for Democracy and Economic Initiative (CDEDI).
Activist Namiwa was arrested last week for allegedly conducting unauthorized vigil at Parliament building in Lilongwe.
In a statement made available to the media, MHRC has described the arrest of Namiwa as unjustified and unnecessary “and a deception of serious rights violations.”
The commission has also revealed that it will conduct its own investigations and release its findings on the matter.
Namiwa was arrested for allegedly leading vigils at Parliament without permission demanding answers on the smuggling of the K93 billion Loan Authorization Bill.
