A 37-year-old primary school teacher died yesterday after being hit by a motor vehicle as he was crossing a road in Ntchisi District.

Ntchisi Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda identified the deceased as Kondwani Martin Phiri of Buzi Primary School.

He said Godfrey Masonda, 33, was driving a Toyota Rush hatchback from the direction of Mponela heading to Ntchisi Boma and upon arrival at Kalumo Village, he hit Phiri who was crossing the road from right to the left hand side.

Phiri sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Ntchisi District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Postmortem results showed that death was due to head injuries.

According to Kaponda, the driver of the vehicle has since been arrested and will appear in court soon to answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving.
