A Zimbabwean man from Mwenezi, Masvingo, recently carried the corpse of his brother across Limpopo after the latter died at the river.
Peterson Makuvire (36) was bringing his brother, Norman, home from South Africa after falling sick.
Masvingo Mirror reports that a Police report in the hands of both South Africa and Zimbabwe confirms the incident that happened last Wednesday.
According to the Police report at around 11 pm on August 18, a detective who was deployed at the illegal crossing point noticed a man crossing the Limpopo River while carrying another man on his back.
The police officer and other security details intercepted Makuvire who informed them that he was carrying his sickly brother from Lipalole Province in South Africa and they were on their way home to Mwenezi.
After the Police officers inspected Norman they realised that he was already dead. The dead body had no visible marks that could indicate foul play.
Peterson said he decided to take his brother home because he has not been feeling well since 2018 and the illness was getting worse by the day.
Masvingo Mirror further reported that the body was certified dead by Dr Linos Samhere and it tested negative for Covid-19.
However, Peterson has since been arrested by Beitbridge Police for illegally crossing into Zimbabwe from South Africa.
Zimbabwe sealed its land borders as a measure to curb the transmission of the coronavirus into the country.
The country’s Coronavirus infections ballooned last year and early this year following the opening of borders with most of the imported cases coming from South Africa where millions of Zimbabweans reside.
Thousands of people have been arrested for unlawful entry or departure, in that order, into and from both Zimbabwe and South Africa since the closure of borders.
