The First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Blantyre has committed convicted police officer Andrew Chagaga to high court for sentencing.
Chagaga was convicted of raping a girl twice while in custody at Limbe police station.
The state lawyers prayed for a stiffer punishment considering the circumstances under which the offence was committed, both during and after the commission of the offence.
The police officer is currently remanded at Chichiri Prison waiting for sentencing.
The State is being represented by three lawyers- Trevor Mphalale from Ministry of Justice’s chambers of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Chikondi Chijozi from Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) and Ruth Kaima from the Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Advocacy (Chreaa).
