TikTok has banned the Milk Crate Challenge on its platform.
This simply means you can not post Crate Challenge on TikTok and neither can you see any again on the video-sharing app.
TikTok has deleted search results for the hashtag “milk crate challenge” and explained that the challenge was promoting a dangerous activity.
“TikTok prohibits content that promotes or glorifies dangerous acts, and we remove videos and redirect searches to our Community Guidelines to discourage such content,” a spokesperson said. “We encourage everyone to exercise caution in their behavior whether online or off.”
The challenge, named the Milk Crate Challenge, has been the latest trending activity on social media. It simply shows people trying to walk step by step over crates parked on each in a pyramid form.
The challenge is believed to have started from the U.S on August 1st, 2021 after a Chicago resident posted videos to Facebook of two men walking on milk crates. The two videos show the two falling whilst trying on the crates step by step.
According to Know Your Meme, the challenge is actually based on a video that went viral a decade ago. In the clip posted by the YouTube channel JoyRidersTV Bonus Footy on June 23rd, 2011, a guy runs across a staircase made of milk crates before falling and injuring his back.
This clip appears to have inspired Facebook users Kenneth Waddell and Jordan Browne who were the first known people to do the Milk Crate Challenge in August 2021.
They posted a video of people playing the crate game in a public park on Facebook which went viral and was then copied by thousands of people around the world.
Washingtonpost.com reports that about two weeks later, “the videos were shared by two people in Columbus, Ohio, and went viral after a video of people failing the challenge was posted to TikTok, where it received more than 5 million views in one day”.
