In Kenya, Meru Senator Mithika Linturi has been charged with attempting to rape a 36-year-old woman before Milimani Law Courts.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nazushi, the senator denied two charges of attempting to rape and committing an indecent act.

The prosecution alleges that on January 30, 2021, at 3 am at Mayani villas hotel in Nanyuki, Laikipia East sub-county intentionally attempted to rape a 36-year-old woman.

He is further accused that at the same date he committed an indecent act by intentionally touching the woman’s breast and private parts without her consent.

After denying the charges, the state through Evelyne Onunga, did not object to Linturi’s release on bond but urged the court to grant him bail on conditions he should not interfere with witnesses either directly or indirectly through his proxies.

Linturi’s defence team led by lawyer Mothomi Thiankolu urged the court to release the Senator on reasonable bail terms.

The magistrate granted Linturi plea and ordered him to deposit a Ksh500,000 (over K3.5 million)  bond or a bail of Ksh200,000 (K1.4 million).

His arraignment comes after he failed to stop his prosecution at the High Court late last month.

Justice Weldon Korir declined to issue the conservatory orders barring the DCI and DPP from arresting and prosecuting the senator on criminal charges.

The case will be mentioned on October 26.
