Foreign Affairs Minister Eisenhower Mkaka has confirmed that President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and Malawi will not physically participate in the 76th United National Assembly.
Mkaka told Journalists in Lilongwe on Thursday that President Chakwera is expected to participate and deliver a number of statements at UNGA76 via virtual platforms.
“The President will participate in a number of High-Level Meetings and will deliver pre-recorded Statements on behalf of the Republic of Malawi and also in his capacity as Chairperson Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Lead Development Countries (LDCs),” he said.
The Minister added that President Chakwera will work hand in hand with various Cabinet Ministers in undertaking his scheduled UN engagement and will delegate Malawi’s participation in other events to Ministers.
UNGA76 is taking place from 14-30th September under the theme ‘Growing Resilience through hope-to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalize the United Nations.’
