Malawi Defence Force (MDF) plans to expand its Zomba Airbase so that it has full-fledged facilities.

Deputy Minister of Defence, Jean Sendeza disclosed this after visiting the base on Friday.

“We need 250 hectares of land to create a better runway. That land will be an extension from the existing base so that we can build schools, a health facility, warehouse and other facilities befitting the airbase,” Sendeza said.

Sendeza said the Ministry of Lands will value the land which belongs to Korea Mpatsa to determine the cost for acquiring the land.

The works are earmarked to start in the next two to three months after the evaluation is done.

The Deputy Minister said construction of the facilities will be funded by Government.
