Following reports making rounds on social media and other news outlets that some parts of the country are experiencing an insufficient supply of fuel, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has assured the general public that there are sufficient fuel stocks in the country.
According to a press release dated 29th September 2021 the authority has released, there is a total of 22 million and 32 million liters of petrol and diesel, respectively.
These volumes however translate into 28-days stock cover and 54-days stock cover for petrol and diesel, respectively.
Meanwhile, Authorities are making every effort to address the fuel stockouts experienced at some retail stations that have been caused by the drivers’ strike.
MERA has since appealed to the general public to refrain from panic buying of fuel.
Furthermore, the authority has reminded fuel retail stations that hoarding of fuel is prohibited and MERA will apply stiff penalties to any retail station found to engage in such malpractice
