Agnes Jebet Tirop, Kenya’s two-time World Championship bronze medalist, has been discovered dead.
On Wednesday, October 13, the 25-year-old long-distance runner, who represented Kenya at the Tokyo Olympics, was discovered dead in her home in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Barnaba Korir, Chairperson of Athletics Kenya in the Nairobi Region, verified the unfortunate news, saying she had stab wounds in the belly.
Her ex-lover is suspected of carrying out the murder.
Tirop finished fourth in the 5,000m women’s finals at the Tokyo Olympics, clocking 14:39.62.
Tirop won bronze in the World 5,000m in 2019. She also took first place in the senior Cross Country Championships in 2015.
On September 12, 2021, Tirop broke the 10km World Record. She ran 30:01, which was 28 seconds faster than the previous women-only 10km road record held by Asmae Leghzaoui of Morocco in 2002.
