President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Monday admitted that he is the ‘driver of a minibus which is carrying different types of developments to deliver to Malawians’.

The admission has been described as a direct response to an attack by former Member of Parliament for Ntcheu West Mwai Kauyambeni who is also member of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

Kumuyambeni who recently dumped Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and joined likened Chakwera to a minibus driver while his Vice as the conductor.

He then said any fault to the minibus, the driver will take a blame and not the conductor.

“Chilima amaitanila kuti kavoteli Tonse Alliance feteleza muzagula pa mtengo Mk4,500 koma pano ali pa Mk7,500. Vuto ndila conductor kapena driver?” Kuyambeni asked Malawians during a campaign rally in Dedza recently.

Responding to the attack, Chakwera clarified that Chilima is not a conductor but a mechanic who will be fixing any fault on the minibus to ensure delivery is accomplished.

He then referred to Ministries, Government departments and Agencies as conductors who will make sure the goods (developments) are taken on board to be delivered to Malawians.

“Ministers, when you are called to the Lab by the Officers, do report because it is not Officers calling you but me. Malawians deserve quality projects so I urge you to deliver” said Chakwera.

But Chakwera’s remarks have attracted mixed reactions among many Malawians.

Feston John Selemani wrote: “Meanwhile the minibus that travels with the mechanic in it ndi phokonyole, kankha ukwele, ndulamoyo.”
