The Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (PAC) summoned Chief Commissioner of Prisons Ms. Grace Wandika Phiri over allegations that some prisoners are smuggling mobile phone handsets into the country’s prisons especially Zomba Maximum Prison.
According to reports PAC wants Phiri to explain if she is aware of the issue and efforts being made to end the malpractice among others.
PAC chairperson Joyce Chitsulo is yet to comment
However, the Committee received reports that mobile phone operators are failing to make positive strides to curb mobile money theft due to the problem.
Phiri is expected to appear before PAC on Wednesday this week at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
