Government has given Fukumele Building Contractors a 14-day ultimatum to raise standards of their construction works or risk losing the contract.
Minister of Lands and Housing, Kezzie Msukwa, said Government will not sit back and watch when project completion deadlines are not met by contractors.
He made the remarks after visiting the construction progress of the 10,000 security officers houses at Songwe and Ipyana sites in Karonga district.
“We will have no options but look into contract clauses which can allow us to terminate the contract,” warned Msukwa.
Responding to challenges the contractors raised, Msukwa advised other stakeholders to look into the issues and find a solution.
“We need to find lasting solutions to the challenges that are contributing to delays in meeting the set deadlines in our projects,” said Msukwa.
For his part, Managing Director for Fukumele Building Contractors, Clement Mukumbwa, acknowledged the delay of the project and requested an extension.
“We will not meet the deadline set due to several logistical challenges and we request for an extension up to February next year,” said Mukumbwa.
The Chakwera Administration is constructing 10 houses for men and women in uniform at Songwe Border Post and another ten at Ipyana.
