Mozambique’s military chief says some troops fighting Islamist insurgents in the north of the country have been abusing civilians and stealing property.

Admiral Joaquim Mangrasse said about 30 soldiers were in detention, accused of looting banks in the town of Palma, which was seized briefly by the militants earlier this year.

Troops have also stolen domestic goods and crops from villagers.

And they’ve been accused of killing and torturing people suspected of having links with the jihadists.
