Police in Lilongwe have arrested two people in connection to mob justice that led to death of Chipiliro Katchika, 34, and left others wounded at Mtandula village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Malili on November 7, 2021.

The suspects have been identified as Selemani Latiyala, 51, and Enos Samuel, 46, both from Mtandula village, T/A Malili in the district.

Facts are that on November 7, there was Chief Mtandula’s elevation ceremony, from the position of group village to senior group village head.

It is said that as per their tradition, considering that the ceremony was a gulewamkulu dominated cultural event, different areas sent their gulewamkulu members that include from T/A M’bwatalika.

It is further said that for reasons yet to be established, disagreements that ended into a fierce war between Mtandula villagers and the gulewamkulu contingent from M’bwatalika erupted soon after the arrival of the latter at the function.

Two people including Chipiliro, now deceased, who were among the people escorting the M’bwatalika gulewamkulu, sustained severe injuries.

Chipiliro was later pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

The suspects will appear in court soon to answer a case of murder which contravenes Section 209 of the Penal code.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers have intensified investigations into the circumstances that led to this brutal murder until all perpetrators are brought to book.

Police in the district further condemn any acts of mob justice, and that no one will be spared if found on the wrong side of the law.
