The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has distanced itself from reports that the party has ordered its followers to shun peaceful demonstrations organized by former United Transformation Movement (UTM) Youth Director Bon Kalindo.
Kalindo, popularly known as Winiko is set to hold demonstrations against rising cost of living under the Tonse Alliance of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Friday in Blantyre.
The demonstrations are scheduled to start from Blantyre town hall via Chipembere Highway to Civic Centre.
On Wednesday, reports indicated that DPP has gagged its supporters from taking part in the demonstrations.
But DPP Spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba has quashed the reports.
“My office as Party Spokesperson has not issued any statement stopping people to hold peaceful demonstrations against rising prices.
“The DPP believes in civil liberties for the citizens of Malawi and it is the right of each citizen under the Constitution Of Malawi to demonstrate,” wrote Namalomba.
He added: “We support such rights.
“I contacted Zodiak and confirmed that it’s fake. None talked to me on this issue. They can’t stop the will of the people.”
Meanwhile, Kalindo has resigned from Tonse Alliance.
