President Lazarus Chakwera has been asked to come out and condemn publicly the acts of violence the happened in Blantyre last Friday during the anti-government demonstrations.

The call has been made by the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa.

On November 19, 2021 former United Transformation Movement (UTM) Director of Youth bon Kalindo mobilized Malawians to go to the streets and protests against government’s failure to address socio-economic challenges that have engulfed the country.

Attributing to the continued rising cost of living in the country, Kalindo said it is a sign that the country’s leadership has failed hence calling for the resignation of President Chakwera.

However, before the demonstrations commenced, another grouping being led by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ward councilor Jomo Osman came in and started petting stones on the peaceful protesters resulting into ugly scenes.

According to unconfirmed reports, the grouping was sponsored by some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) senior officials hence Namiwa’s call to president Chakwera to condemn the act and distance his party from them.

“It is against this background that CDEDI is calling upon President Chakwera to publicly condemn the barbaric acts in Blantyre, and distance his party from them,” said Namiwa.
