President Lazarus Chakwera and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi have launched a Malawi-Mozambique (MOMA) Power Transition Interconnector Project in Balaka, this morning.

The $127 million project has been launched at Phombeya Sub-station in the district.

The project aims at contributing to economic growth of the region through sustainable power access by integrating Malawi electricity market to the Southern African Power Pool.

The MOMA interconnection will start from Matambo in Mozambique, crossing into Malawi through Mwanza and will end at Phombeya.

The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
