Malawi leader, President Lazarus Chakwera who is also Chairperson for Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) has faulted the travel ban which has been imposed on Countries of the region over the newly detected Covi-19 variant.

South Africa recently detected a new Covid-19 variant, Omicron.

Following the development, United Kingdom, European Union, United States and Australia have imposed travel ban on SADC countries.

Among others, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia are appearing on the travel bans.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Chakwera said everyone is concerned about the new Covid-19 variant while acknowledging Scientists form the Rainbow Nation for identifying the variant before anyone else.

“We are all concerned about the new Covid variant and owe South Africa’s scientists our thanks for identifying it before anyone else did,” said Chakwera.

He then said that the bans are uncalled for as he said said Covid-19 measures must be bases on science.

“But the unilateral travel bans now imposed on SADC countries by the UK, EU, US, Australia, and others are uncalled for. Covid-19 measures must be based on science, not Afrophobia,” Said Chakwera
