One person died while five others escaped unhurt in an accident that occurred at Mponela in Dowa District on Saturday.

Mponela Police spokesperson MacPatson Msadala identified the deceased as Lumbani Banda.

He said the accident happened around 5pm at Mankhaka Village in the district.

At the time, Yohane Banda was driving a Nissan UD body and trailer from Lilongwe direction heading towards Kasungu with six passengers on board.

According to Msadala, on arrival at Mankhaka Village near Kasese Trading Centre, Banda lost control of the motor vehicle as he was trying to avoid a stationary vehicle and as a result, he swerved to the extreme offside and the trailer overturned sideways.

Following the impact, Banda fell from the moving vehicle, sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Dowa District Hospital.

The deceased’s body is still at Dowa District mortuary waiting for full identification.
