At least seven people are feared to have been injured following a fire that broke out at Leopard Match Factory at Ginnery Corner in Blantyre, police confirms.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established although it is believed that it started from a storage facility at the factory.

Currently, firefighters from Blantyre City Council joined by Chileka International Airport fire brigade, are trying to put out the fire.

However, it has spread to Ishan Products Factory which is next to Leopard Match.

Glinton Mitayi, Deputy Commissioner of the South West Region Police confirmed of the development.

“Four employees of Leopard Matches Company and three passersby got injured in the incident. Let me also add that an explosion from the fire has also shattered glasses at Umodzi Park Offices which are about a hundred meters away from the factory,” said Mitayi.

Officials from Leopard Matches Company were not available for comment.
